A Century of Family, Land & Livestock
Our Story
Suffangus Farm LLC, formerly Meadowbrook Farm, was started in 1904 when William Swortzel moved his family onto it. Five generations later it has evolved through the years, being involved in different aspects of agriculture. It is currently operated by Mac and Isaac Swortzel, the 4th and 5th generations.
Mac grew up farming and worked after college for Farm Credit and other lenders. He moved the farm towards beef and sheep production with his purchase of Angus heifers in 1968 and Suffolk sheep in 1970. Since then he has focused on producing high quality beef and lamb, as well as seedstock, by focusing on performance and data driven genetics. He has been involved at multiple levels in the different associations of the Virginia cattle and sheep industries.
Isaac came back to the farm in his late 20s. He is the first person in three generations to be able to farm full time as a career. He and his wife got into commercial poultry to allow him to farm full time. Being back on the farm, he looked for ways to improve for the future and moved towards intensive grazing. He enjoys continually learning about grazing management strategies and innovating where he can to improve farm efficiencies and the land as a whole.
